Menai Insight makes available our tools for academic research at a substantial discount relative to commercial access, and have tailored our plans to meet the needs of academics. In order to continue to provide our services, and in-line with many academic-licensing arrangements, we place various restrictions to protect our intellectual property.
This document lays out acceptable usage of our services, providing clarity on how you can use our analysis as part of your research, while also describing the academic-license restrictions. Specifically, as described further below, while you may use our services as part of research analysis, and may use examples of our textual structures if you desire in your publications (in-line with our citation guide), our services must not be used for commercial purposes, and you may not distribute or share processed data. We have designed this policy to strikes the balance between encouraging and support academic research, but to do so in a sustainable way, that allows us to further our academic offerings.
You should also refer to our other policies, including our general terms of service, which also govern the usage of our services.
1. Acceptable academic usage
We want to provide clarity on acceptable usage of our services, giving you the confidence for using our service within your research.
- You may use our services within your analysis, and publish the results of your analysis: For example the output of regression or other forms of analysis, correlation matrix, descriptive statistics, trends, figures, and other aggregate statistics. You do not need to run the results past us, however, we would be grateful if you cite/acknowledge our services, as you would any other data source.
- You may use the results across academic-focused mediums: For example, you may publish your results in journal articles, dissertations, books, academic-posters, and conferences. You may also publish the results in newspapers and magazines, provided your primary employment is as a researcher (i.e., not a journalist), however, as outlined below, may not the results for commercial purposes (e.g., consulting projects, or other ventures), nor publish the processed data in 'datasets'.
- You may publish a limited number of example textual structures: If, for illustrative purposes, you want to share examples of our textual structures as part of your publications you may do so, following our citation guidelines (and subject to the limitations below).
We do not want to limit academic research - if you have any questions about whether your work falls within acceptable academic-usage, please contact us at support@menaiinsight.com - if it is bonafide academic research, and you don't distribute the processed data, then you will most likely be fine.
2. Limitations on the Academic License
Our academic licenses restrict commercial usage and distribution and sharing of processed data.
- Our academic must not be used for commercial purposes. Commercial purposes include situations where no payment is received. Examples of commercial usage include, but are not limited to: Consulting or advising work; analyst research (for example, preparing analyst reports); Work undertaken for a company; And usage for one's own commercial purposes (for example, investment decision). If you have commercial needs, you may view our commercial options here.
- Processed data must not be shared or distributed. All accounts, and the material processed by those accounts, are intended for use by the named account holder, and should not be shared or distributed in any manner. This includes sharing processed material with other researchers or companies, posting the material online, or publishing datasets.
In addition to the academic license, use of our services is subject to our general terms of service. For example, you may not reverse-engineer or services, nor used to process certain prohibited materials (such as confidential information, or information collected from social media).
3. Violations of the Academic License
Accademia is built upon trust. In designing our academic policies, we have tried to balance the needs of researchers to access and process large volumes of information, with our needs to protect our continued ability to provide our services. Violating these terms breaks your terms of service, our copyrights, and the trust between us. If we become aware of violations to academic license, your account may be terminated, and we may take reparation actions.
